The forms used in Puryear's sculptures are mostly shapes like triangles or spheres ... unless form refers to the overall shape, in which case about half of the sculptures are identifiable objects like a ladder or a wheel, while the other half are just sort of blobs. I can tell that the craft of his work is important because everything is handmade and very precise. This shows up in the sculptures as super smooth surfaces and precise angles when angles are present.

Puryear's art doesn't look like anything at first but when i took time to actually notice his techniques and skill his art seemed to have a purpose. His use of no nails or glue shows pure craftsmanship and the time he took to make these magnificent pieces of art.

Puryear's sculptures are all hand crafted, this way Puryear is really able to take in what he is doing and create everything to his liking in a unique way. Most of Puryear's sculptures have a large part and come to a point. In many of Puryear's sculptures the craft of his work is very smooth, well sanded and has a curvy appearance to it.

Puryear is a unique sculpture, he takes the tedious time to hand craft all his pieces of art. They have a surface that is not only smooth, but sanded down to perfection. Many of the forms of his sculptures are often have some form of a curve to it, if it be a sphere, a domed shape at the end, or of the neck of a dinosaur it is a reoccurring technique used. His pieces also require you to take the time to analyze it and comprehend the theme.

I notice that in Puryear's work, it is very common for him to use straight and curved line combinations, as well as different combinations of textures, values, materials, etc. The work is obviously important to Puryear because otherwise his work would not be as detailed. Tedious detailing tries patience, and he makes beautiful work. His fine intricate designs show how much he cares about his work because it's obvious that the work he does takes time, patience, and talent. -Peter Brown
ReplyDeletePuryear uses old school technology to make modern art. He makes simple yet complex shapes sing just thin planks of wood (old mole). Puryear must be proud of his work otherwise he would not continue making HUGE wood pieces with such precision.

What I noticed in his work is all of them go from fat to thin and they are all rounded the ways it shows that he cares about his work are all the wood is sanded smooth and they are all sculpted well.

Puryear uses a lot of round forms in his work, very soft and delicate. You can see he takes a lot of pride in his work, because they are very well crafted, and formed.
